Unusual lockdown

2020

Contrary to the approach taken by many other countries during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Germany pursued a different path. On one hand, they made necessary decisions to restrict public life, but on the other hand, the government was determined not to infringe upon the freedom of its citizens.

With the exception of Saarland and Bavaria, citizens were allowed to spend time in parks, provided they observed the 1.5-meter social distancing rule mandated by authorities. Some exceptions were made for families and residents of shared apartments.

The urban landscapes captured in these photographs from Berlin serve as a visual testament to that particular moment in history, portraying scenes of almost ordinary life.
