During the night of July 19, 2022, a fire that broke out on the hills of Massarosa quickly spread to the nearby territory which falls within the municipality of Camaiore and also in some hamlets of the municipality of Lucca; at the same time, another relatively smaller fire developed between Lucca and Pisa. About 1000 hectares of woods, fields and olive groves were burned and about 1000 residents of different villages were evacuated.
The drought that has hit the peninsula in recent months has made entire territories increasingly vulnerable to fires, in this case of a malicious nature, affecting many inland areas of the country.
